Our Standard
Pleasing and honoring to Christ
Each student’s appearance should be such that Christ would be pleased and honored. No immodest dress is allowed. Our standards rest on three biblical principles: modesty is essential, needlessly offending others is wrong, and our dress should honor God and avoid the appearance of evil.
Kindergarten through 12th Grade
Boys
- Pants: navy, black, dark grey, or khaki dress pants, clean and properly fitted, free of rips, tears, or excessive wear; a solid black or brown belt is required, with modest buckles subject to office approval.
- Shirts: loose-fitting, collared polo (2–4 buttons) in a solid color—small brand logos or Elmwood logos permitted—or a solid button-up dress shirt with a tie; kept tucked and buttoned except the top button; sleeves must reach within four inches of the shoulder; no visible undergarments except solid turtlenecks or long sleeves underneath.
- Outerwear: neat, conservative sweaters, quarter-zips, vests, or cardigans may be worn over a uniform shirt that stays visible at the collar; hoodies, crewneck or oversized sweatshirts, and fleece or flannel jackets are not permitted during the school day unless approved for a special event; outdoor coats and jackets should come off upon entering the building.
- Shoes: conservative, solid-color dress shoes or boots that can be cleaned and polished; no athletic, canvas, or skate shoes, Crocs, slippers, sandals, or other casual footwear (athletic shoes allowed for P.E., practices, and recess); no feminine styles or fashion heels; shoes must stay clean and in good repair.
- Hair: clean, neatly groomed, and tapered—not touching the ears or collar, not covering the eyebrows, and no more than about 1½ inches in height; no extreme or trend-driven styles (mohawks, mullets, bowl cuts, shaved designs, and the like) and no dyeing or coloring; the Administration determines final compliance.
Kindergarten through 12th Grade
Girls
- Skirts, dresses & jumpers: a modest, loose-fitting skirt or jumper to at least mid-calf (no culottes, no denim); slits may not rise above the back of the knee; solid-color leggings worn underneath must be full-length or fully concealed.
- Shirts: loose-fitting, collared polo (2–4 buttons) in a solid color—small brand logos or Elmwood logos permitted—or a solid button-up dress shirt; buttoned except the top button; sleeves must reach within four inches of the shoulder for grades 7–12; no t-shirts, form-fitting or sheer fabric, or anything that reveals or outlines an undergarment; no visible undergarments except solid turtlenecks or long sleeves underneath.
- Outerwear: neat, conservative sweaters, quarter-zips, vests, or cardigans may be worn over a uniform shirt that stays visible at the collar; hoodies, crewneck or oversized sweatshirts, and fleece or flannel jackets are not permitted during the school day unless approved for a special event; outdoor coats and jackets should come off upon entering the building.
- Shoes: conservative, solid-color dress shoes or boots that can be cleaned and polished; no athletic, canvas, or skate shoes, Crocs, slippers, sandals, open-toed shoes, or other casual footwear (athletic shoes allowed for P.E., practices, and recess); shoes must stay clean and in good repair.
- Makeup & jewelry: light, natural-toned makeup permitted from age 14, nothing bright or excessive; one conservative earring per earlobe—no large or dangling styles, and none worn outside the earlobe.
- Hair: clean, neatly groomed, and styled in a natural, conservative manner; not falling over the eyebrows or eyes; no extreme or trend-driven styles and no unnatural or distracting dye or coloring; the Administration determines final compliance.
Kindergarten through 12th Grade
Not permitted
- Jeans or denim of any kind
- Graphic apparel (large logos or words on shirts or sweaters)
- Athletic wear, including sweatpants, athletic shorts, hooded sweatshirts, crew neck sweatshirts, and leggings worn as pants
- Mini-skirts, skirts that are at the knee when sitting, cargo pants, low-rise pants, any tight or form-fitting pants, tops, or skirts, wallet chains, dog collars, or spikes and other such “accessories.”
- Collarless shirts
- Untucked shirts
- Wrinkled clothing
- Attire that is excessively casual, revealing, distressed, or otherwise inconsistent with the spirit of this policy
Ages 2–3 Years
Preschool
Boys
- Navy, black, dark grey, or khaki pants in good condition.
- Collared, loose-fitting 2–4 button polo of any color or pattern, buttoned except the top button.
- Dress shoes or solid black/brown/navy casual or athletic shoes.
- Hair cut and neatly groomed.
- An extra set of dress-code clothing kept at school for accidents.
Girls
- A modest, loose-fitting skirt or jumper to mid-calf (no culottes).
- Collared, loose-fitting 2–4 button polo of any color or pattern.
- Dresses that cover the shoulders and reach below the knee.
- Dress shoes or solid black/brown/navy casual shoes (no open-toed shoes or sandals).
- No makeup; one stud earring per ear lobe.
- Shorts worn underneath dresses or skirts.
- An extra set of clothing kept at school for accidents.
